For the first time, it was decided to establish the pieces of art on the shore of the Danube in 1975. Built in the middle of the 1970s, a botanical garden with 58 large works of art is located on the richly planted shore of the Danube. It is one of the most beautiful regions of the city, with many pedestrian paths along.
To stabilize and populate the coastline of the Danube, in 1968 the city council formed the budget for monitoring and a coastline service. The reasons for forming the coastline guarding system became the unfavorable hydrogeological conditions, rough interference to the ecological system during a city building and the lack of infrastructure. 6 years later, on this revived place was founded a Steel Sculpture Workshop in Dunaujváros as a part of the movement of artworks, created in the second part of the 1960s.
Metal use, especially iron, became popular in art in the modern architecture context after the Second World War. Owing to its features, this material has almost unlimited possibilities to be used for sculpture not just because of different methods of processing (founding, forging, welding and so on), but also almost unlimited possibilities to change the shape and size. The metal became a new alternative of the traditional materials of the sculpture.
In total, 44 artists took part in the competition, including those who came from different countries. The duration of the colony of artists could be from 6 to 7 weeks with a monthly internalization. For the first time, they worked in the College of Metallurgy and Metalworking from the University of Heavy Industry, and then in different departments of the Danube Metallurgical Plant. In addition to the traditional materials, made on the Metallurgical Plant, the invited sculptors used semi-finished stainless steel and different profiles for decoration.
The installing of these statues became an important investment in the art of a new socialistic city, that time called Stalinvaros.
