According to archeological excavations, on the place of the Reformed Great Church, there was another church in the 13th century. That was the church of St. Andrew, which was installed until the 16th century – the big fire happened and destroyed the church completely. On its place was built a Gothic church, which was also burned in 1802. So, the modern Reformed Great Church was established in 1827, and according to the project of the architect Mihai Pecha, the works started in 1805.

Reformed Great Church of Debrecen Cathedral is the largest Reformed church in Hungary and the main building of the city. Constructed in the Neoclassical style, it can contain almost 2000 people. It is not just religious, but also important historical and cultural sight. On April 14, 1849, Lajos Kossuth read there the Declaration of Independence, which made that church one of the most important national memorial places in Hungary. In 1991, it was visited by Pope John Paul II.

One of the most beautiful sights on the 1st floor is an organ, which was constructed in 1838 by the Viennese master Jacob Deutsch. Consisting of 4258 pipes with 52 registers and three manuals, it is one of the most beautiful cathedral instruments of Hungary. The organ’s play is heard not just during the divine services, but also during the musical ceremonies, organ concerts, and classical music concerts, which regularly take place there.

Reformed Great Church of Debrecen is the main touristic sight, which invites the visitors all the year. On the 1st floor is the memorial exhibition of Kossuth and exposition showing the history of the cathedral. The most important exhibit of the collection is the original old Bible. The permanent exposition is dedicated to the Bible and Painting. In the east tower, there is an elevator for the visitors, who want to visit the highest floor. Every man can come to the dome of the western tower, the Rakoczi bell, and enjoy the marvelous landscape on the panoramic passage.
