Do you want to visit a wonderful place, as if from fabulous illustrations or Disney animated movies? Then head to the Fisherman's Bastion. It is the most famous architectural complex in Budapest, located on Castle Hill, Buda Castle District.

The construction of the bastion took place in 1899-1905 and was timed to coincide with the millennium anniversary of Hungary, like many other city sights. The white-stone architectural complex in the Romanesque Revival style was built on the site of a partially destroyed fortress wall that had surrounded the Buda Castle. The project was designed by the Hungarian architect Frigyes Schulek. Today, the complex comprises the Holy Trinity Square and the surrounding gallery.

During the Second World War, the bastion was badly damaged. Interestingly, its reconstruction and renovation were carried out by the master's son, Janos Shulek, who followed in his father's footsteps.

The gallery is 140 meters long and 8 meters wide. It is decorated with impressive tent-roofed towers, arcades, and balustrades. The number of towers symbolizes the seven tribes that founded Hungary.

The bastion offers a magnificent view of the city: the Danube and the opposite bank of the Pest district are clearly visible. The bastion itself can be seen from the embankment, where it is so pleasant to walk and admire the complex.

There is also something to see near and inside the bastion:
1) Matthias Church, which was supposed to be decorated and framed by the complex of the Fisherman's Bastion.
2) The statue of St. Stephen and the equestrian statue of Stephen I, located in different places. Stephen was the patron saint and the first ruler of the country who united the Hungarian tribes and gave them Christianity.
3) The statue of St. George slaying the Dragon, a replica of the famous Prague monument.

Locals advise visiting the bastion at least twice, in the afternoon and the evening. In the daylight, you will like the Fisherman's Bastion at first sight, and the magical evening illumination will only strengthen this feeling. So, the Fisherman's Bastion will have a special place in your heart for the rest of your life.
