Those who want to study the history of Hungary without wasting time on long and boring books can come to Heroes' Square (Hősök tere) in Budapest and learn about the formation of the country and its outstanding personalities. Heroes' Square is located in Pest, opposite the City Park. It faces Andrassy Avenue and neighbors the Museum of Fine Arts and the Budapest Hall of Art.

The appearance of Heroes' Square coincided with the celebration of the millennium of Hungarian statehood in 1896.

The square houses several monuments that can help you fill all the gaps in your knowledge of Hungarian history. The main landmark is the Millennium Monument in the center of the square. It is a 36-meter high Corinthian-style column topped with Archangel Gabriel. Gabriel stands on the globe, holding the Christian cross and the crown of King Istvan (Saint Stephen), the first ruler of Hungary. The pedestal of the column is adorned with the equestrian sculptures of the Hungarian leaders. The authors of the Millennium Monument are the architect Albert Schikedants and the sculptor Gyorgy Zala: they were engaged in its creation for 42 years.

Nearby, there are two semicircular 85-meter colonnades, representing a monument to the heroes of Hungary. They were being created within 33 years and installed in 1929. Between the columns, there are bronze figures of the great Hungarian rulers of the Arpad and Anjou dynasties, as well as the Transylvanian princes. Above, the colonnades are decorated with allegorical sculptures of peace and prosperity.

The central column stands in front of a memorial plate dedicated to the soldiers of the two world wars: the monument was erected in 1956, and 45 years later, it got an inscription: "In memory of our heroes." During public holidays, there is a guard of honor, a solemn laying of flowers, and a tribute to the memory of the Hungarian defenders.

The Millennium Monument, the colonnades, and the memorial plate form a single complex of Heroes' Square.

Besides the cultural institutions and the park listed above, there are several other attractions worth visiting near the square. For example, the Timewheel, the 1956 Square monument, Vajdahunyad Castle, and the Széchenyi Thermal Bath.
