In 2019, Budapest was included in the top three European cities for tourism according to the British Consumer Association "Which?". Voting for the capital of Hungary, tourists most often noted excellent recreational activities, such as spending time in hydrotherapy wellness complexes and spa centers right in the city.
It may come to you as a surprise, but Budapest is the only capital that has an official resort city status. So keep this in mind when you decide to spend another vacation in a resort center: more than a hundred thermal springs and at least a dozen different baths await you in Budapest. And one of them is particularly noteworthy.
According to tourists and citizens, the Gellert Thermal Baths, located in the hotel of the same name on the west bank of the Danube, is considered the most beautiful one in Budapest. Even the most sophisticated visitors of this place are impressed with its picturesqueness and grandiosity: it looks more like a palace than a spa. You immediately notice stained glass windows, marble columns, bronze statues, decorative mosaics, and stucco. Then you also see fountains with drinking water, oases of plants, leather furniture, pleasant lighting. This environment creates a unique atmosphere of luxury and joy, which makes the Gellert Baths so loved by the visitors and guests of the hotel.
Previously, this delightful institution was ironically occupied by a mud bath, which bore the appropriate name, Sarosfurdo, meaning "Dirty Bath" in Hungarian.
The four-story building of the baths and hotel was built in the Art Nouveau style in 1918. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by hostilities during the war. Later, the building was reconstructed. Nevertheless, locals began to use the local thermal springs as early as the 13th century.
Today, the Gellert Baths house several pools and physiotherapy rooms. Thermal water is rich in beneficial elements that have a positive effect on the body and help fight diseases of the spine, joints, blood vessels, skin, etc. But be careful! It's easy to get lost in the building.
