Olympus is the central symbol of ancient mythology. To be in Greece and not to admire this powerful miracle of nature is a big mistake, because, according to legends, that was the place where the gods lived under the leadership of Zeus himself!
Olympus has 4 main peaks, more than 1.5 thousand canyons and plateaus, which are located on the border of Thessaly and Greek Macedonia. To get to the foot of the mountain, you need to book an excursion or take public transport to the village of Litochoro and then go on foot to the top of Olympus.
In the first part of the route, you can go along the shore of the river. There you see a mountain lake of emerald color. Then, the stairs will lead you higher and higher, and you come to the Orionia village, which is hidden in the middle of the mountain, By the way, there the locals brew good coffee in a tavern.
You also can pick up easier routes and come not to the highest peaks of Olympus; but if you want to stand, where Zeus and Aphrodite lived, you should take the route to the “Shelter A”. It is located at a height of 2100 meters above sea level, there you can eat and even take a nap.
After the rest you can go to the top of the mythological mountain, it takes 2 or 3 hours of unhurried walking. All the paths have the signs, so you definitely cannot get lost. Soon you find the fork, one way is for those who want to reach the highest point of Olympus – Mitikasa (2918 meters), another one has the easier route to Skolio (2912 meters).
Coming on the top of Olympus, the highest peak of it, you will have breathtaking feelings. For a second, it seems that it is not happening with you, because… you walked and walked, and appear in a unique place, which is related to an immense number of legends and myths, and probably Poseidon and Athena actually was there…
