Many of us have not an idea what Acropolis is. Let’s find it out! The Greek word “acropolis” can be divided into two parts: “akros” and “polis”, which means “the highest city”. So, now we are ready to learn some information about the antique world of Rhodes island.

Acropolis is placed on the top of the massive rock, where tourists can enjoy marvelous views. The temple in Rhodes was built earlier than Acropolis in Athens, but the importance of the first one is lower. By the way, historians have not still succeeded in defining the real age of a Rhodes temple. We just have a legend, according to which in the 6th century BC tyrant of Lindos restored Acropolis. Archeologists, in turn, examined the temple and conclude, that it was constructed in the 4th century BC.

Acropolis has a long history. It was used as a fortress by the Ottoman Empire and was damaged. After the Rhodes conquest by Italians, Acropolis was under restoration. Today the Greek Archeological Service controls the renovation of a temple.

Acropolis makes you admire its constructions, which were built in different periods. For example, the Temple of Athena Lindia was founded approximately in 300 BC. Historians think that the temple was burned and then rebuilt. At least, ancient Greek legends tell that. Inside, visitors can see the altar and the base of the Athena statue. You are more interested in Hellenistic stoa, both sides of which are decorated with wings? It was built in 200 BC and has large dimensions. You can also enjoy the architecture while coming to Acropolis: the Monumental stairs, which was built in the 2nd century BC, will lead you.
