Perama is the oldest and the longest cave in Greece, according to the scientists’ opinion, it was formed about 1.5 million years ago. The length of the cave is about 5 kilometers, but only the one fifth of it is exanimate because the tourists can go only through the 1-kilometer route.
The cave is located 6 kilometers from Ioannina in the village Perama, which is situated on the mountain, and the cave is in the mountain. It is considered, that on the place of a cave flew an underground river, which eroded the soil. Perama was discovered in 1940 during the Second World War when Greece was under the mass bombardment, and the citizens did not know where to hide, that is how they found the cave with a multimillion histories.
The entrance to the cave starts with a huge number of steps and seems to be ordinary, but coming inside you can see the underground beauty, impressing with its uniqueness. In the cave there is a large number of stalactites and stalagmites (mineral forms looking like icicles growing not just from top to bottom, but also the other way), they are everywhere. The path for visitors smoothly leads you through all the precious mineral sights. A guide tells you how the cave was discovered, who and when made the research there, and why the most part remains unexamined.
The yellow lighting naturally underlines the unusual forms of stalagmites and stalactites, for example, in the forms of mushrooms, they are considered as to be very rare. In the cave, there are a lot of bats which act very quietly, but sometimes they flap the wings and suddenly start to fly. It adds some mystery to the excursion and adrenaline to the blood by its unexpectedness. In the cave there also live blind white spiders, they are tiny and cannot hurt people. That is why you should not be afraid of them.
