The Moorish Castle is a complex of medieval fortifications, including ramparts, gates, and towers, considered one of the main and most famous tourist attractions in Gibraltar. This fortress had an important role in the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. Therefore the historical value of the landmark is extremely significant both for Gibraltar and for Europe.

In 711, the first troops of Tariq ibn Ziyad and Musa ibn Nusayr came ashore in Europe and began to conquer the lands of Spain and France. Although no documentary evidence has yet been found, most historians have unanimously agreed that the construction of the Moorish Castle is related to the debarking of the Moors on the Iberian Peninsula.

A significant area was allocated for the construction of the castle: fortress walls surrounded a stretch of land from the sea coast to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. The most interesting of the remaining fortress buildings are the Tower of Homage, the Gate House, and the fortified stone walls.

At the top of the Gate House, there were watchmen who warned the soldiers about the enemy's approach. Thanks to the vantage strategic location of the tower, they could immediately notice both an offensive by land and the enemy ships in the sea.

An equally important building in the Moorish Castle complex is the Tower of Homage. It is erected at the very top of the cliff and is visible from various corners of Gibraltar. The tower is more than 100 meters high, thus highlighting the uniqueness of the Moorish Castle once more because such structures are not typical of Islamic architecture.

In 1309, the Spanish managed to regain the territory captured by the Moors and destroy all the Arab fortifications on the lands of Gibraltar. However, already in 1333, the Moors reoccupied these lands and rebuilt the castle again, calling it the Tower of Homage.

Now the Moorish Castle is a museum open to the public. Among the museum exhibits are wax statues of significant historical personalities, such as Tariq ibn Ziyad, who moored in Gibraltar in 711, and Al Mumipa, who founded the city in 1160.
