This beautiful old castle is a unique building, which was based in the 5th century. Its history is interesting since the moment of founding. Being as the fortress for several decades, it was turned to an ordinary stable. That is how that beautiful construction became an ordinary building. In 941, the building was strengthened and used as the fort. Some time later, in the 16th century, the castle became the rich residence of the Dukes of Württemberg.
For its history, the castle was destroyed many times, it was renovated and restored. In the 14th century there appeared a defensive ditch, in the 15th century – the suburb, which was used as a place for the defense. Apart from the defensive buildings, the peaceful part of the dukes’ residence was also developed. So, in the 16th century, the palace got three wings with three-floored arcades. That incredibly beautiful building was used for the walks and celebrations. The facade had a look of the rough fortress, but inside it was full of beauty and luxury.
The attention was paid to the convenience of life in the residence. For example, many stairs had ramps to let the horsemen go to the second floor through the central hall of Durnitz, located on the first floor.
In one of the wings of the castle, the owners built the church, which became the first evangelical church of Germany.
The modern look the complex got to the end of the 16th century.
A sad event took place in the winter of 1931 – a big fire destroyed the oldest part of the castle, two towers and the richly decorated hall - Durnitz. The restorers began renovation works immediately, which were finished in 1944. Everything could be great, but the wartime and the constant bombardment affected the condition of the building. Once, the shells hit the building, and the fire burnt all the constructions except the church.
After the war, the complex was completely rebuilt, architects and restorers tried to make it as authentic as possible. And now, in the buildings of the castle, is located the main museum of Baden-Württemberg.
