At the beginning of the 20th century, Europe was the period of the new architectural trends. Modernism, brutalism and other styles changed the cities’ look. Germany was the creator of new tendencies. The most popular architects, painters, artisans, industrialists’ union was Werkbund. His members came to different world-famous exhibitions, won the prizes, but still desired to realize their ideas in Germany.

In 1927 they got a right to build the whole new quarter in Stuttgart, the symbol of the future. The creators made the facades completely white, that is why today it is called Weissenhof Estate – the White quarter.

What is a feature of the block? Firstly, all the buildings are matching with the landscape. All the hills, hollows, trees and bushes are taken into account while constructing houses. That is why they have an unusual shape. Secondly, the masters refused to decorate buildings. According to their opinion, the houses of the future are beautiful because of modesty in design. Thirdly, architects paid attention to the living rooms’ plan. The house is not only a place for the night spending, but this is also a space for working and creating.

Unfortunately, the building was stopped under Hitler’s government. He was assured that all the houses should be standard in Germany . The complex was also particularly destroyed during the 2nd World War: only 6 houses out of 21 were in good condition. Nowadays they are completely restored and considered as one of the main Stuttgart sights.
