Blutenburg Castle

Old castles and palaces have a lot of legends and mysteries. One of the most beautiful castles of Bavaria, Blutenburg, is not an exception. One of his legends tells about the love of a rich duke’s son and a poor barber’s daughter. The father of the son was against marriage and blamed the girl for witchcraft. She was sentenced by a consistory to drowning in a pond. A young duke grieved for a long time. On the place of a hunting lodge, where the two lived after a secret wedding, he built a castle. Initially, that was a fortress, hiding the duke’s love from prying eyes – high walls, watchtowers, solid gates. But after his death, the castle became propriety of heirs, which rebuilt the castle. About two centuries the fortress was changing its look. But, in 1827, the city government got the propriety rights on a castle, because the dukes’ power lowered. From the middle of the 20th century, a castle was functioning as a convent. In 1980 a part of the complex became propriety of the international junior library.

Nowadays, it is a unique historical monument, which is visited by hundreds of tourists every day. The facade of a castle looks modestly and ordinary for European architecture, but inside it is richly decorated. For example, the Palace Chapel is a church, built by Jörg von Halsbac. It has incredible decorations under the roof, coats of arms of famous families, faces of the saints.
