Visiting Hamburg, it is necessary to see one of the famous sights of this city – the harbor. This is an incredibly large, interesting and beautiful place.

According to some data, the harbor is located on the one tenth of Hamburg’s territory, and its area is about 75 square kilometers. Of course, it is impossible to see the whole harbor, but you can visit the most beautiful places.

The history of the harbor began in the 9th century, when the archbishop of a church allowed the citizens to trade, and they started their businesses with pleasure, choosing Elba for sailing. But the official opening, if we can say this about the old harbor, was in 1198, that was the time the Hamburg merchants got permission to travel on ships along Elba to the Northern Sea without paying taxes. And the year 1198 is also considered as the day of Hamburg founding. That is it – the harbor in the city was built earlier than the city was founded.

The harbor has its anniversary on the first weekend of May. It is celebrated with happiness, it looks like a festival, dedicated to this harbor. The citizens of the city love this celebration because they think that Hamburg’s harbor is the gates to the world, offering different opportunities.

The museum harbor is one of the most interesting places there. You can see the ships of different periods and modifications: from sailing ships to cargo boats. It is allowed to come on every ship, and see, how the life of the teams is organized, or how the 1st class cabins are equipped.

Also, in the harbor, there is the “City of Warehouses” – Speicherstadt, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century and is considered as a historic sight nowadays. You can see the old buildings, the warehouses of tea and coffee, the wooden houses if you take an excursion on the boat along the channels of the harbor. The harbor is adored by the citizens, and the large part of the Museum of the History of Hamburg is dedicated to it because the harbor is the basis of the economic prosperity of Hamburg.
