Usually, old European cities are famous by ancient cathedrals, fortresses and town halls. Düsseldorf had its features, like the Media Harbor, where futuristic architecture and unusual sculptures can impress any traveler.
Previously, on the place of the Media Harbor was an old port. Later it was abandoned, and in the 1980-90s, the authorities decided to install new bright and unique buildings. The first one was Rheinturm, a TV tower. It became the highest construction in the city, 240 meters high. Later, other buildings were added: the television and radio companies, advertising agencies, design bureaus, so the harbor started to be “media”.
When the construction of the district was finished, the citizens name it “Architectural Zoo”, because every building was unusual.
The main feature of the Media Harbor is the three houses of New Customs or “drunk houses”, the project of an architect Frank Gehry. The second popular building is the office tower “Colorium” of multicolor glass pieces, made by Will Olsop.
Among the interesting buildings – houses in shapes of ships. According to the architects’ opinion, these buildings tell visitors about the initial function of the place. To fix the idea, they also left the old cranes, which unloaded the goods.
Nowadays, this is also an art space with various exhibitions and concerts.
