The romantic name "Painter's Way" is given to the most difficult but at the same time the most picturesque hiking trail in the German national park "Saxon Switzerland". With a length of more than 130 kilometers and elevation differences of up to 430 meters, the popular trail has become a favorite destination for all ecotourism and nature lovers. The artists were so fond of the trail's fabulous landscapes that they not only gave it a name but also immortalized the beauty of the park on their priceless paintings. You can see their works in local museums, or rather put on comfortable shoes, throw a backpack over your shoulders and go to the park to admire the original landscapes.

Along the fantastic trail, travelers overcome a dense deciduous forest, moss-covered rocks, and rebellious rivers rapidly flowing down. The park comprises many artificial monuments and structures: from the old power plant dating back to the 19th century to the monument to Richard Wagner dressed in knightly clothes. At the foot of the great composer, you can see the allegorical figures that personify the five elements of his music: lyrical, dramatic, spherical, Dionysian, and demonic figures.

Not far from the monument to Wagner, there is an old water mill, behind which forest scenery gives way to bright yellow rapeseed fields, and then again to impassable thickets and sharp gray rocks. Up and down, curious tourists are led by stone stairs equipped with convenient handrails and safety fencing. You can get to the next point much faster if you go straight, but then you can lose the beauty of natural landscapes, the enchanting sounds of the forest, and the murmur of a mountain river.

After passing the gloomy black cliffs of the Uttewald Gate, travelers come to a small observation deck. It offers a delightful view of the old colorful town called Stadt Wehlen. This is the perfect place to stop, gain strength, taste German cuisine, listen to local stories, and in the morning, with renewed vigor, go to the following attractions of the trail: the famous Bastei Bridge and the huge stone giants, Elbe basalt rocks.
