The city Cologne in Germany is a homeland of Eau de Cologne. The history of perfume is presented in the house 4711, which is a museum today. Previously it was a workroom and a perfume shop of Wilhelm Mülhens, a famous Cologne master of scents and a founder of perfumers’ family. He established one of the most known trademarks worldwide – “Eau de Cologne 4711”, which is often called “German Chanel №5”.
The museum has many interesting items, but the most attractive – an order list with a signature of Napoleon Bonaparte. He adored this perfume and not only applied it on clothes but added to water while taking bath and gargling.
The historians have a legend, how the perfume was created. A long time ago, Mülhens played his son’s wedding. A lot of guests came to congratulate the fiance. Among them was a poor priest, and Mülhens let him live in the house. The priest had nothing to thank the kind man and gave the most precious thing he had: an old parchment with a formula on it. Young Mülhens read it and saw the perfect proportion of a scent. This is how “Eau de Cologne 4711” appeared.
This formula is still a Mülhens family secret. It passes to the younger generation without any changes.
