Today, a former fishing village named the Vallon des Auffes is a small and quiet area near the Old Port of Marseille. Located in a cozy natural bay, sheltered from the wind, this area has a dense development of small colorful houses on the rocky shore and countless boats moored to the pier or brought to land.
It seems that time has stopped in this ancient harbor: nothing has changed here for many years. Despite the proximity of civilization, it has preserved its charm. It feels like you are in the past of Marseille, about 200 years ago.
The Vallon des Auffes is a very colorful and interesting place that is worth a visit. Come here to feel the sea spirit of the port city, see the old fishing houses, as if piled on top of each other, breathe in the salty air, feed the seagulls, take bright and colorful photos.
A well-known fact from ancient times: the good protection from the sea has made the bay perfect for safe mooring. Today, it is used not only by fishermen but also by children who splash around in clear waveless seawater and fans of paddleboarding.
It is especially charming to come to the Vallon des Auffes in the early morning. The golden rays of dawn make it even more beautiful. Besides, you can enjoy the quiet atmosphere of this place. And of course, that's when you can get the best pictures possible. If you are not a fan of early morning awakenings, then don`t worry. The fishing harbor is also ideal for a romantic dinner with a view of the sea sunset.
According to residents, one of the local restaurants serves the most delicious bouillabaisse in the city (bouillabaisse is a signature Marseille soup made from different types of fish). Or there is also an excellent pizza restaurant.
You can get from the Old Port to the Vallon des Auffes on foot or by bus (it takes about 10 minutes).
