In the heart of the city, opposite the Madonna rock, is the Biarritz Maritime Museum. It is one of those attractions that are worth seeing.
The Maritime Museum building was built in the 20th century. Moreover, not only the museum's exhibitions are of interest, but also its appearance. Designed in the Art Deco style and devoid of additional decoration, it attracts attention with clear geometric lines of the facade, as well as narrow elongated Windows.
More than 20 aquariums are located inside the four-level Museum. Their inhabitants are various species of fish and marine animals, most of which live in the Bay of Biscay. In total, the Museum presents more than 150 types of live exhibits.
The first person who had the idea of creating such a museum was the Marquis de Folin. This person took part in the study of the flora and fauna of the Bay of Biscay.
A separate museum hall is dedicated to sharks. On the next level, museum visitors can get to know seals.
The organizers did not ignore the smaller inhabitants of the sea depths. There you can see turtles, various shellfish and crustaceans.
In addition to the real abodes of the sea depths, the Museum (on the lower level) also presents huge skeletons of whales and dolphins that were washed up on the shore. Besides, you can see films, photos, and documents on the development of fishing and whaling in the region.
Not so long ago, the museum building underwent reconstruction. After that, the museum's collection was expanded with new aquariums with inhabitants of the Caribbean, North Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans.
People who are interested in Maritime Affairs and navigation will like the collection of various geographical maps, navigation devices, and ship models.
The museum has a souvenir shop where you can buy a souvenir reminding you of your visit to this magical place. The Maritime Museum also offers guided tours. Experienced guides will detail each exhibit separately. The only condition for organizing a tour is to gather a group of interested people.
