Coming to the charming capital of French Provence, the town of Aix, you should definitely not only visit the famous Cours Mirabeau boulevard with its aristocratic mansions, wide sycamore trees, and splendid fountains but also plunge into the artistic world of Paul Cezanne.
Aix-en-Provence is the native town of the famous artist whose paintings adorn the best museums in the world. Here, he was born, he studied and befriended the famous French writer Emile Zola, worked in the studio where his house-museum is now located, grew old, and, finally, died.
His favorite town, Aix, can be found in almost each of his paintings. Among them are such as “Mountains in Provence,” “Maison Maria with a View of Château Noir,” “House in Provence,” “Mont Sainte-Victoire.” Admirers of the artist from all over the world come to Aix to follow a trail “In the steps of Cezanne” designed particularly for tourists.
Firstly, it is worth visiting the artist’s studio to feel the special creative atmosphere of this place. Then, to complete the picture, you should go on foot to the observation deck about 20 minutes away from the studio. It overlooks the very Mount Sainte Victoire, which Cezanne depicted.
This observation deck is called the “Field of the Painters,” and right under the open sky, you can see replicas of famous paintings and read a brief note for each.
Here you can enjoy the delightful nature of Provence, feel its splendid scents and colors, as well as admire the views that inspired the renowned artist.
Mount Sainte Victoire, which is over 1,000 meters high and has a unique nature, was Cezanne's unfailing muse. It posed for him in any weather, at different times of day and seasons, and became the subject of more than 80 of his works. The beautiful view is complemented by Provencal cypresses and sycamore trees, as well as cozy tiled-roof houses.
To visit the observation deck, it is desirable to have at least some physical training because you must climb uphill using paved stairs. Admission to the field is completely free.
