The ancient provincial town of Aix-en-Provence in the south of France is famous because outstanding, globally renowned impressionist artist Paul Cezanne was born and lived there for most of his life.
The beauty of the nature of Provence inspired the artist to create. However, initially, he did not have a taste for painting, and at the insistence of his father, he studied law.
In 1901, the artist bought a land plot in the northern part of the town on the side of Lauves Hill and built a small house on it in the middle of a beautiful olive grove. On the second floor of the cozy building with a yellow facade and pink windows, impregnated with light, was the artist’s studio, where he created his masterpieces. Now replicas of the famous artist’s paintings hang in the house, and the original paintings are exhibited in the best museums in the world.
When Paul Cezanne died, Marseille Provence bought this house from his son and retained all the furnishings as they were during the artist’s life. Here you can not only look at the original furnishings and household, paints, and easels but also feel the extraordinary, peaceful, creative atmosphere of this place as if the owner of the house had to leave for a while and would soon return.
The artist’s studio is trendy among the fans of the great artist, whom Pablo Picasso called “the father of us all.”
The artist left behind about 800 oil canvases, not counting watercolors and drawings. Guests are greeted by a big shelf with laid out tablecloths, ceramics, fruit, and dishes, which were the protagonists of the artist’s still life paintings.
On the first floor, visitors are shown the film “Cezanne’s Universe” dedicated to his work. An exciting tour in French is offered as well. The museum also houses a bookstore and a gift shop. Besides, temporary exhibitions and cultural events are regularly held here.
Paul Cezanne’s studio is open daily from April to September. The entrance fee is 6 euros per person. You can get to the studio from the center of Aix-en-Provence in 15-20 minutes on foot.
