It is becoming increasingly difficult to surprise modern travelers, but architects, sculptors, and artists have a rich imagination. Just look at the unique Lutheran church of Temppeliaukio, located in one of the Helsinki districts. This church definitely has no analogs in the world.
The original design of the Finnish church was created by the architects and brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen in 1961. Then it took them only a few years later to build this real masterpiece of modern architecture.
One of the most visited places in the Finnish capital got its name from the eponymous square on which it stands. It was so intended even before the outbreak of World War II. Unfortunately, the war had other plans for it. So it was finally possible to return to the project only after more than 30 years. The ambitious project of the Suomalainen brothers was aimed at preserving the original natural landscape of the square and harmoniously fitting the modern structure into it. Hence its second name, "Rock Church". The unusual religious building was, indeed, carved into the rock.
The lighting inside the church is provided by a huge glass dome, and the acoustics are created by raw stone walls, including the wall behind the altar formed by a melting glacier.
Although the original size of the church was reduced by almost a third to save money, Temppeliaukio Church still makes an unforgettable impression on visitors.
Every year, it is visited by more than half a million tourists from all over the world, and famous conductors dream of holding concerts within its walls. By the way, the church hosts concerts and various events that require excellent acoustics rather often. Moreover, in 2006, there was the first so-called metal mass in Finland. Then the religious service was accompanied by heavy rock music.
The unique building of the church is made of granite stone in the style of Modernism. For instance, this church has no bells, which indicates the modern approach of its architects to sacred architecture. However, visitors can still hear an analog of bell ringing – music composed by the talented Finnish composer Taneli Kuusisto.
