Harbors, Ports, Fjords, Quays

A rather small Faeroes town Klaksvík is situated on the isthmus between two sea harbors of the island Borðoy. Its history dates back to the age of Vikings, however, only in the 20th century due to its advantageous location it became a cultural and business centre of the Faroe Islands. At the very beginning, there had been four farms that grew into small villages. Later on, the villages merged to form one town in 1938.

Nowadays tourists can see authentic constructions built by Vikings and learn about the great ancient warriors’ life in the local museum. Those who love quiet strolls may visit a memorial of two biggest snowslides of 1745 and 1765. Klaksvík is not only rich in historical monuments, but it's also a cultural centre of the Faeroes Islands. It’s well-known for the talented sportsmen and bright independent musicians. Even though the town combines the past and the present, the main landmark of this place is still nature.

The harbor is surrounded by the mountain chain headed by the magnificent mountain Kunoy, the symbol of Klaksvík. This outstanding view is usually seen in postcards and souvenirs. Another mountain worth your attention is Klakkur. Climbing there is an essential part of visiting the town.

Klakkur is 413 meters high. Climbing it is quite easy, you won’t even need any special equipment. Just don’t forget to take some warm clothes to protect yourself from the strong north wind at the top. The way up and down will take you about three hours, but the impressions you’ll get are going to last all your life. From the top, you will see a stunning view of the spines of the mountains Kalsoy and Kunoyarnakk, the fjords of the  Kunoy and Esturoy islands, and of course the harbor of Klaksvík. This place is especially popular with world scenery photographers.

The route itself attracts tourists as much as the final destination. You have to go through two wooden gates to find the gravel road that will lead you to the mountain lake. After enjoying its beauty, you will go up to the foot of the hill and then following the narrow paths up to the top, to the marvelous view of Klaksvík and its surroundings.
