The Faroe Islands are not a place for those who are used to spending their vacation on cotton-white beaches sipping Margarita. There are no comfortable hotels and equipped beaches, fine sand and warm sea, and sunny days are not numerous. Instead of all that, there are small fishermen’s houses, designated for tourists, rocky mountains and black basalt sand, cold ocean, and many bays. The weather conditions of the island deserve special attention. During a day, you can experience extreme temperature variations and sudden gusts of northern winds that resulted in almost complete absence of trees. It’s easier to count sunny days, not overcast ones, as the wet season lasts there for about 280 days per year. However, the immaculate beauty of these places compensates all these terrible at first sight inconveniences. The fjords broken by the sharp cliffs, the hills covered with moss, the green pristine meadows, and picturesque harbors, sinking in the foggy mist.
All the islands have their peculiarities, but the main attraction of each of them is a natural monument. It can be said about the village Hoyvík located near the capital of the Faroe. No factories and plants are polluting the air. There is only severe northern beauty, a number of small waterfalls on land and whales swishing their tails in the ocean. The best way to describe this place is to use the English expression: “in the middle of nowhere”.
The residents of the eighteen Faroe Islands, whose population is just 45 thousand people, sincerely believe that the archipelago is the legendary Atlantis. According to them, having sunk into the depth of the Atlantic ocean, it rose to the surface of its water again and has been serving as their home for many centuries now. One day, the time will come, when the ocean will overcome the mountain barrier. It will wipe these wonderful rocks off the face of the Earth and the history of Atlantis will repeat. Until then, the Faroe Islands will be attracting thousands of tourists from across the globe and conquer everyone with their amazing beauty.
