The Estonian Open-Air Museum is located eight kilometers from the center of Tallinn at Rocca al Mare in the Haabersti District. Here, on 79 hectares of land, there is a reconstruction of a fishing village of the 18th century, which will be a perfect destination for a family getaway out of the hustle and bustle of the city. Get to know traditional Estonian culture, take a walk in the open, have a picnic. The Estonian Open-Air Museum is more than just an exhibition space!

The first attempts to create an architectural and ethnological museum in Estonia were made at the beginning of the 19th century, but they were put off by notorious foreign policy events and a lack of funding. As a result, the museum was founded in 1957 thanks to the local Union of Architects. Nowadays, there are at least seventy buildings on its premises, divided into twelve farmsteads. Those, in turn, are united on a local basis into five parts: Western, Northern, and Southern Estonia, the Islands, and Stand-Alone Objects.

One of the most famous attractions of the museum is the Sutlepa Chapel. Built at the end of the 17th century, it is the only one of its kind and the oldest religious building in the entire country. The chapel’s exterior showcases local peasant traditions in architecture, and its interior can boast of having interesting Baroque elements.

Another attraction of the museum, favored by tourists, is the Kolu tavern. Built in the 19th century, it is a typical establishment for its time. Today, you can not only study the traditional design of such a meeting place but also taste national Estonian cuisine.

In the Estonian Open-Air Museum, you can also see a village school, a fire station, a grocery, windmills, and fishing houses scattered on the seashore. Many of them are open to visitors and can immerse you in the ambiance and daily life of peasants. Museum staff, dressed in traditional costumes, will complete the overall picture and answer all questions that you may have.
