There is a place that both adults and children, individual travelers, and close-knit companies will enjoy visiting. It is the Tallinn Zoo, the oldest and largest zoological park in Estonia. Universally, the time spent in nature taking a leisurely walk through the forest while discovering wild animals always bestows rich emotions, pleasant memories, and a feeling of good rest.
Tallinn Zoo is located within the city’s precincts, so it won’t be challenging to get there on foot or on public transport. Spreading over 89 hectares, it occupies almost the entire Veskimetsa subdistrict in the Haabersti District. Lake Harku, the Kakumae beach, an all year skating rink, and the Estonian Open-Air Museum are close by: you can start or continue your leisure time there.
The story of the Tallinn Zoo began very unexpectedly. In 1937, a team of Estonian shooters won the world title at an international contest in Helsinki. The winners brought home not only a well-deserved cup but also another trophy, a live lynx Illu. The Tallinn authorities decided to think big and built a whole zoo for it on the outskirts of Kadriorg Park. Illu became its first exhibit and mascot.
The Tallinn Zoo moved to its current location in 1983. Today, it counts almost 8,000 animals whose diversity has exceeded 500 species. You can see exhibitions with kangaroos, leopards, lions, elephants, seals, pheasants, birds of prey and waterfowl, inhabitants of the Alps, the Arctic, Central Asia, the Tropics, and South America. The exceptional gem of the zoo is some of the world’s best assemblage of mountain goats and rams, eagles and vultures, owls, and cranes.
For your good rest, a cafe and a gift shop are open on the territory of the zoological park. Moreover, there is a Children’s Zoo where you can spend time with alpacas, rabbits, goats, sheep, various rodents, and birds. There is also an Environmental Education Center and a library with specialist literature.
