Viking Ship Museum in the Danish city Roskilde is a national museum of ships, navigation and building of ships in Dania in the prehistoric and medieval periods. The history of Vikings in Denmark is discussed very attentively, and that it is not surprising – it is a significant historic period of this interesting country.
In the 11th century, around the year 1070, it was decided to sink 5 Vikings’ ships in Skuldelev in the Roskilde fjord to protect the population from the enemies’ attacks in the sea.
Some centuries later, in 1962, these ships were discovered, now they are known as Skuldelev ships.
A few years later, in 1969, in Roskilde, the authorities were established the Viking Ship Museum, where you could see the marvelous view of the fjord Roskilde. So, with 5 Skuldelev ships began the history of the museum.
Later, at the end of the 1990s, during the enlargement of the museum’s shipyard, it was discovered that there were 9 more ships of the Viking’s Epoque in the Middle Ages. I want to notice that it was the largest discovery of the prehistoric ships of Northern Europe. Besides, there was found the longest military Vikings’ ship.
Viking Ship Museum has a long history of the ships’ reconstruction and the boats’ building and also collects the interesting boats from all the Scandinavia. Now the exhibition of the museum includes more than 40 ships.
In the museum you can have an active and interesting time, here you will not just look at the old ships, but also try the Vikings’ dishes.
And on the shipyard, where the workers built the ships of the authentic materials and tools, you can take part in the construction and join the ancient handicraft.
