Cemeteries

In many European countries, people treat death with respect, and cemeteries are considered a kingdom of silence and tranquility, where it is improper to talk loudly or walk like in a park.

But not in Denmark! Here, it takes some time to realize that you are in the middle of a city cemetery. Only the stone tombstones indicate that this is a cemetery. The Danes treat death as something ordinary and inevitable. For them, it is not a big deal to go for walks in city cemeteries, as well as arrange tours for tourists.

One of the most famous cemeteries in the Danish capital is Assistens. It is located in the heart of Copenhagen and is more like a park, a popular holiday destination for both citizens and tourists. There are many families with children and pets, who peacefully walk along crosses and tombstones, drink cocktails and even sunbathe. Many people may find this behavior blasphemous and indecent, but it is commonplace for the Danes.

Despite various prejudices, this ancient cemetery is a must-visit place for every modern traveler. It is a final resting place of such outstanding personalities as the great storyteller Andersen and Russian General P.N.Myshetsky. Many legendary people wished to be buried in Assistens Cemetery. The old Danish necropolis has been considered a prestigious burial site since the early 19th century. Before that, it had been a burial place only for the homeless for almost a century.

Assistens Cemetery is a popular tourist attraction. Every year it is visited by tens of thousands of tourists. Thus, the local authorities have repeatedly thought about starting to charge entrance fees. After all, Assistens Cemetery even has its own museum dedicated to the Danish writer Herman Stilling, known for his stories about fantastic trolls. The museum is located in old stables on the very edge of the cemetery along with an art workshop and a children's cafe.
