Once upon a time, there was a king named Gylfi, the very first Scandinavian ruler, the hero of the mythical sagas. According to an ancient legend, he promised the goddess of fertility Gefjon a generous gift for her wonderful speech: as much land as four bulls can plow in a day. Then the beautiful goddess turned her sons, born of a giant, into huge and strong bulls. The furrow they made was so deep that a giant piece of land was cut off from the ancient kingdom.

Thus began the history of the modern Danish island, called Zealand by the goddess. The place of this furrow turned into the wonderful Lake Vanern. Today, Vanern is considered the largest lake in Sweden, and Zealand – the largest island in Denmark. The Danes still thank the goddess for her generous gift. They create beautiful paintings, sculpt magnificent statues, and even immortalize her name in the fountain named after her, which can be found in the picturesque harbor of the capital.

The amazing sculptural composition was created by the Danish sculptor Anders Bundgaard at the end of the 19th century. Initially, the fountain was meant to become a symbol of the city and the main decoration of the square in front of the City Hall. At the last moment, the city authorities changed their mind and placed the fountain in the harbor. The grand opening took place in 1908. The fountain had entertained the citizens and guests of Copenhagen for almost a hundred years until it was closed for a thorough restoration.

The charming goddess and her four loyal bulls spent more than 5 years isolated from everyone. In 2004, the Gefion Fountain was finally re-opened and the goddess of fertility watered the masterpiece again. What could be better than walking in a green park on hot summer days, enjoying the view of the fountain, and feeling the cool splashes of water?
