St. Budolfi Cathedral in Aalborg is the most popular sight, respected by all the Danish citizens. The cathedral, constructed in the Gothic style, is one of the oldest - it was built in the 10th century.
That cathedral, sanctified in honor of St. Budolfi (the protector of sailors), was built in the Roman style, as other Danish churches. But, unfortunately, in the 14th century, the cathedral was almost destroyed – there were just the fragments of the basement. The citizens did not leave it without attention. With the money of sponsors, the merchants and wealthy traders, on the ruins they constructed the new cathedral, which got the Gothic features
People have always considered the cathedral as a significant building, it was decorated, enlarged, and preserved.
Owing to the care, and now you can admire frescoes of the 16th century in the perfect condition. Recalling all the donations and restoration works, we can tell about the altar of 1689 and baroque spire of 1779.
Inside the church is located in a large collection of works of art. On frescoes of the 16th century, you can see the four evangelists - the lion of Mark, the bull of Luke, the eagle of John and the angel of Matthew. There are also magnificent paintings with the Bible scenes and a gilded altar.
In the center of the cathedral, there is a gallery with beautiful paintings with the scenes of the Old and New Testaments, made in 1899. You can also pay attention to the font, made of black and white marble, with the silver bowl in the shape of a shell and decorated with engravings (1728).
Inside the cathedral on the walls, there are portraits of sponsors, who donated money on the restoration and decorating works, and the epitaphs in memory of respected citizens.
