The bridge over the Elbe river, that has become a symbol of the city of Ústí nad Labem, is attractive in its shape. For some, the bridge structure resembles a triangle suspended over a river, for others, the strings of a harp or the wings of a bird ready to fly. Mariansky bridge connects two parts of the city.
This is one of the most modern bridges in the Czech Republic, built in the 90s of the XX century. Created as a large connecting line, it serves for the passage of vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians. For a long time, there was only one road bridge in the city. The rest were at a distance of 25 km on both sides. So it was decided to get a new "connecting element". Residents of Ústí nad Labem and the surrounding area consider their Mariana bridge as one of the most beautiful buildings in the region.
Having appeared on the city map in 1998, the new bridge immediately became the main city landmark. The structure was built over four years by the architect Roman Koutsky. The materials used for construction are steel and reinforced concrete. The bold architectural design has become a reality with two pylons 75 meters high, on which 30 ropes hold the bridge structure. The construction immediately aroused interest around the world. In 1999, the bridge was awarded the prestigious Structural Steel Design Award at the ECCS (European Association of steel structures) competition. In 2001, it was included in the top ten most beautiful buildings of the last decade of the XX century in the international review of the famous magazine Structural Engineering International.
The entrance to the bridge begins under the Mariana rock from Přístavní street and ends at Děčínská street on the opposite side of the Elbe. Along the river, it is the third bridge (and the youngest) in Ústí nad Labem, after the railway bridge and the E. Benes bridge.
