The history of the Czech capital began with the ancient Prague Castle. It was the home of the Czech kings in the past and is the residence of the President of the Czech Republic at present. The Old Royal Palace is the best place to start a fascinating acquaintance with the history of Prague Castle. Today, its walls house the permanent exhibition "The History of Prague Castle".

The Old Royal Palace was built in the 12th century during the reign of Czech Prince Sobeslav I. Since then, only the vaults of the palace dungeon and fragments of the outer wall with the ruins of a Romanesque tower have survived. The first floor of the palace was occupied by the throne room and the prince's private chambers. The next Czech ruler, King Ottokar II, considered them too modest. He ordered the royal palace to be rebuilt in the Gothic style, as well as a significant expansion of its area. Unfortunately, a merciless flame of the strong fire destroyed all the efforts of Ottokar II. The present-day interior of the lower floors, including the palace arcade, was created thanks to King Charles IV. He restored the burnt-out palace in the middle of the 14th century.

At the same time, the ancient chapel was replaced with the new Catholic All Saints Church, designed by the famous architect Peter Parler. Today, the church houses the grave of the Catholic saint and founder of Sazava Monastery, Saint Procopius of Sazava. Besides, the church walls are decorated with original frescoes depicting scenes from his life.

One of the most ambitious was the reconstruction of the palace under the rule of Vladislaus II. The palace was adorned with many staircases and the solemn Vladislaus Hall. Its external Gothic appearance acquired the features of the Renaissance, a popular architectural style in Bohemia in the 16th century. Luckily, modern tourists can still see the rich decorations, as well as various artifacts discovered during excavations within Prague Castle.
