It is almost like in the movies: people in black, people in white; dark dungeons in the light of candles, secret staircases to the bell towers; libraries with Latin manuscripts, the sound of violins in churches and master classes of organ music. And all this is surrounded by strict Gothic, lavish Baroque and cosmic constructivism because Prague churches exist in all known architectural styles.
Night of Churches is an annual event that is not missed by connoisseurs of history and architecture, music and traditions. This event is sure to be attended also by those who like to cross forbidden lines and feel like a detective. The Night of Churches is a May evening (usually from Friday to Saturday) when dozens of Prague churches open their doors at an unusual time for everyone. What is normally closed also opens: for example, underground corridors, doors behind altars, choirs and galleries, cloisters and gardens, refectory and book treasures. Besides, all this is accompanied by beer tastings and exclusive excursions.
The most pleasant "trophies" of the Night of Churches in Prague are, of course, impressions. And small additions to the memory, stamps from temples, can also be collected along the way. This is a postcard analog of the "pilgrim's passport", with which pilgrims go to Holy places.
The event is mainly secular, but it is a great opportunity to find out what views are held by the servants of a particular monastery, or what distinguishes monastic orders. You can just see and hear a lot of rare and beautiful things. And you can even personally ask any question to the Ministers of temples in a secular form: about hockey or the attitude to mobile phones, for example. The cultural event involves churches and churches that are ready for guests and questions (and not necessarily in Czech – the event is supported by volunteers who will help with basic information in foreign languages).
You can walk through the "backstage" of the monasteries from 18: 00 to midnight – each temple offers its own night schedule.
