Connoisseurs of the works of W. A. Mozart will definitely look for the address of the Villa Bertramka in Prague. This well-kept garden with a Villa is located in a secluded corner of the Smichov district.
In the middle of the XVIII century. the garden was purchased by Mr. A. Bertramand. He organized there by an English Park with a summer residence. And this place sooner became famous for Mozart's visits. The composer stayed during his Prague visits in 1787-1791 at the Villa Bertramka and there completed work on the Opera "Don Giovanni".
In that century, Smichov was a Prague suburb. Little by little, villas, estates, and country residences took the place of farmyards, vineyards, fields, streams, and ponds. Previously, the site of the Villa was an estate with a farm. In this picturesque place with hills and vineyards was a typical country house in the classicist style.
In 1784, the estate passed into the possession of the Czech composer F. K. Dusek and his wife, an Opera singer. It is believed that this family hosted the Austrian composer on his Prague trips.
The Villa burned down in a fire in 1871. Therefore, the Villa that now stands on this site is just a restored structure. Since 2019, the restored Villa is considered a national cultural monument.
In the upper part of the garden, you can find a statue of W. A. Mozart by Tomas Sedan made in 1876. On the upper terrace of the garden, there is a stone table and bench. The composer probably worked there enjoying the fresh air.
In four halls of the Villa there is also an exhibition dedicated to the world premieres of the Opera "Don Giovanni" and "Mercy of Titus", as well as the Opera "The Pretend Garden-Girl", opened together with the Opera of the National theater.
Today, the garden around the Villa is accessible for walking. Also Bertramka hosts classical music concerts, music lectures, and conferences. During the summer season, the Villa is open to the public on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
