The Mucha Museum in Prague is devoted to the Czech artist, illustrator and photograph of the 19-20th centuries, Alphonse Mucha. The master was the brightest representative of the Art Nouveau style in his country.

The artist’s biography goes hand in hand with art. At the age of 19, he started working as a theater artist in Vienna. In the 1880s, Mucha studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the Academie Julian in Paris. Over the next ten years, he created illustrations, theater posters and decorative panels. At the turn of the century, he took part in several large and iconic exhibitions that made him famous all over the world. Throughout his life, Mucha worked in France, the Czech Republic and the USA.

Alphonse Mucha created some significant works for Prague. Among the most famous are the series of twenty paintings The Slav Epic, the decoration of the Municipal House and a stained-glass window design for St. Vitus Cathedral.

The museum was established in 1997 to take care of the master’s heritage and popularize his works. It occupies 500 square metres and is divided into seven expositions: decorative panels, Parisian posters, decorative documents, oil paintings, pencil and pastel drawings, photographs and personal belongings. Here you can also watch a documentary about his life and work.

The painter is best known for his Parisian theater posters created at the end of the 19th century and maintained his artistic vision and style. His innovation is that he ennobled artsy posters and emphasized their importance in modern art. After returning to Prague at the beginning of the 20th century, he continued making posters, but they differed from the French ones a lot. Alphonse Mucha turned to traditions and folklore of his people to interpret them in a new way.
