There are places in the modern Czech Republic where you can observe how people lived in the Middle Ages. This is not about castles or the intricacies of narrow streets in ancient cities. You can look into the traditions of past centuries and learn medieval crafts in the historical village.
The open-air Ethnographic Museum "Medieval Village" operates in Ostra, a small village 28 km North of Mladá Boleslav or 48 km East of Prague. You can plan a trip there by going to the Škoda Auto Museum in Mladá Boleslav or spend a whole day in the picturesque Middle Ages. You can also get to the Ostra station by train from Prague, from Masaryk station.
What was life like in the Czech Republic in the Middle Ages? What seems strange and inconvenient today, centuries ago was habitual and allowed people to live an ordinary life. In Ostra, you can spy on the features of medieval life, and not only see but also try to make the necessary and important things for a life with your own hands. Guests are welcome in the houses of artisans. Artisans will be happy to show and tell them how not to get bored, having made such a "jump in time"!
There are the potter and the blacksmith, the carpenter and the builder, the basket weaver and the tailor. A century ago these professions were needed and respected. And next to them in the historic village, the miller and the baker, the rope-maker and the barber work, and the shop of the herbalist and the apothecary is filled with aromas.
This village is very popular with children. There they have the opportunity to climb, play and touch everything. And, of course, guests of all ages in the village will have a chance to try their hand at ancient crafts. For example, to make soap, make a rag or straw doll, work in a paper workshop or at an old press to get wine. Do you want to do something unusual? Then you can shoot a bow or engage in minting coins.
The craft center, Botanicus gardens, and arboretum is open to visitors from late April to early October. The medieval village is closed on Mondays.
