History sitting on the throne and industry supporting the bronze City with the palm of its hand. This is not a dream, but an allegorical sculpture group at the main entrance to the East Bohemian Museum. You can look at unusual figures for quite a long time, but behind them, there are even more urban mysteries and discoveries.

The East Bohemian Museum in Hradec Králové is located on the embankment of the Queen Elishka in a monumental building. This is one of the architectural symbols of the city. In 1995, the building in the Art Nouveau style, characterized by a minimalistic and at the same time expressive embodiment and decor, was recognized as a national cultural monument. In 2019, the Museum reopened to the public after a long renovation.

The history of the Museum began in 1880. The local exhibition of monuments and antiques, held in the summer of 1879, was a direct impetus to its creation. Many of the exhibits displayed on this occasion were gradually acquired by the city for the collections of the newly built museum. This also included valuable city attributes stored until then in the town hall. For example, the so-called Elishka Belt and Gothic spoons, instruments from the Hradec-Kralove torture chamber, a collection of rare musical manuscripts.

The historical building of the Museum was built in 1909-1912 according to the project of the outstanding Czech architect Jan Kotěra (1871-1923), who also designed all its interiors, including furniture and other equipment. The design of the building also served as the sculptor Vojtěch Sucharda, painters Jan Preisler, František Kysela, and Joseph Novak.

Today, the Museum has rich scientific collections and extensive archeological, artistic, ethnographic, numismatic and historical collections from prehistoric times to the present day.

The exhibition presents the history of the royal city of Hradec Králové from antiquity to the middle of the 18th century. One of the main unique exhibits is a new model of the appearance of the city before 1420. In addition to exhibitions, the Museum organizes various cultural events.

The Museum of Eastern Bohemia is open daily except for Mondays. A branch of the Museum is a monument to the 1866 battle of Chlum.
