The cemetery Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mary is one of the oldest preserved wooden buildings not only in the Czech Republic but throughout Central Europe. It is located on the outskirts of the town of Broumov near the city cemetery.

We don't know anything about how long the Church of Saint Mary has been standing on this place and what the building originally looked like. We only know that in June 1421 it was burned during the siege of the city by Hussite troops. The new building, partially preserved to this day, was built around 1450.

The church stands out not only for its age but also for its technical features. It's hard to believe, but there aren't any nails in the wooden building. It is built using the half-timber style, which originated in Germany and became popular in Europe in the 15th century. It is based on the creation of a single lattice frame made of massive wooden beams. So all the parts of the church – the nave, the altar, the ceiling – are combined into a single construction and represent a beautiful example of European half-timbering that has survived the centuries.

There is also a covered gallery, which arouses curiosity among many tourists. Its current appearance is the result of impeccable restoration work. The original gallery with wooden walls was demolished during the Prussian invasion so that this church could be used for the needs of the army. In the gallery, you can see nine art pieces that depict the history of the town of Broumov. They show the invasion of locusts in 1542, and the reign of Emperor Joseph II in the second half of the 18th century.

Inside the Church of Saint Mary, there is a beautiful altar and wonderful paintings with natural and animal ornaments. But there are also quite unique inscriptions in the late Gothic style. The way they appeared and their meaning is still a mystery. The interior is complemented by a precious oil painting of the early 17th century, depicting Czech saints and the patron of the city.
