Cyprus is a unique Treasury of antiquities. In almost every city, you can conduct archaeological research. During the excavations, archaeologists discover new interesting facts from history. And this applies to various aspects of life. For example, a theater…
The Odeon theatre in Paphos was discovered recently, in 1973. Now it is located on the site of the archaeological park of Kato Paphos. It is close to the Villa of Dionysus and The Temple of Asclepius. The site of an ancient market square is also being excavated nearby.
The Odeon was built during the Hellenic era, and in the 2-3 centuries ad was completed by the Romans. I am glad that despite its age, the theater has survived to our time in good condition. It could not be destroyed not only by time but even by a global earthquake that took place in the 4th century.
The Odeon's amphitheater is almost completely cut out of the solid rock, and only the lower part of it is lined with separate stone slabs. The stage is located in the center, its diameter is about 11 meters. From the 25 rows of seats in the amphitheater, only 12 have reached us. Now the amphitheater can accommodate about 1200 spectators. But in the days of "its youth", it could easily accommodate several thousand spectators who were hungry for "bread and circuses".
Although its size has been reduced, the Odeon looks very impressive and monumental. The audience could watch the performance in any weather. The Odeon had a roof. For almost 15 centuries, the Odeon theater has been waiting for its restoration and revival. His expectations were not in vain: now the Odeon theater is one of the most famous attractions in Paphos.
