There is a legend that Archangel Michael was involved in the miracles that happened on this site in the distant past. This is where the name of the church, which means "discovery" in Greek, comes from. Previously, the territory of the modern church was occupied by a Greek monastery, built at the end of the 18th century. Pagans tried by all means to destroy it and even directed flows of two rivers at once. At that moment, Archangel Michael descended from heaven and struck the ground with his sacred spear. The blow opened a huge rift, and the water of the rivers rushed into it. Thus, the current of the rivers changed its direction and the monastery was no longer in danger. However, when the Ottoman army arrived on the territory of Cyprus, many Christian shrines were destroyed as a result of military battles. The fate of the monastery was the same.
However, the locals still remembered the story of the monastery and its miraculous salvation by the archangel. In 1695, a Greek Orthodox church, named in honor of the miracle of Archangel Michael, was built on the territory of the modern Cypriot capital, Nicosia. Moreover, it appeared right in the place of the legendary monastery.
The three-nave basilica, which resembles a medieval fortress, was constructed of processed gray stone in the Franco-Byzantine style, and massive columns divided its interior space into three broad aisles. The remains of the former monastery are still clearly visible in some places of the church, including a well-preserved marble bas-relief depicting two lions with human heads at the southern entrance and a Renaissance coat of arms at the northern end.
The interior decoration of the church deserves special attention. The central entrance is decorated with an ancient fresco depicting the battle between Archangel Michael and Lucifer. The main altar is a luxurious gilded iconostasis from the 18th century. By the way, one of its carved wooden panels dates back to 1634. Despite its considerable age, this church is still popular with young couples. So wedding ceremonies are often held here.
