Agatha Christie chose the city of Vinkovci as a crime scene in her famous novel "Murder on the Orient Express" not by accident. This city is still full of mysteries. Some of them are stored in the walls of the city Museum.

The City Museum was founded in 1946. It is located on the main square of the city, on the site of the former Austrian barracks of the XVIII century. It is one of the most important institutions, as it constantly organizes various exhibitions and presentations that attract tourists and residents. The Museum is working and developing rapidly. The Museum collects more new exhibits, processes and systematizes them into collections. The Museum also contains monuments of the material and spiritual past of the city.

The archaeological department has existed since the foundation of the Museum, and its collections are of particular importance. It is located on the first floor and is represented mainly by finds from the stone age. According to the excavations and the map, it can be understood that people lived in Vinkovci for 8000 years. The Museum also has an exhibition dedicated to the Neolithic period with its stone axes and coarse kitchen pottery, Roman stone tombstones with figures of Poseidon and Hercules, and finally, a medieval collection of ancient Slavic swords. In addition to the exhibits, ancient dwellings were reconstructed.

The ethnological exposition consists of about 1500 items from the first half of the XIX century and consists of three parts. The first introduces the life and lifestyle of the local population. Among the numerous wicker, clay and richly carved wooden objects in the Museum, there are also more valuable exhibits. Examples of traditional dress costumes with gold embroidery, ceremonial wedding headbands, jewelry, and even a ceremonial carriage with horses and carriage. The second part of the exhibition consists of drawings and models of craft workshops. Thanks to these materials, you can learn a lot about shoemaking and skinning, about the manufacture of hats and even drums. The third is a multimedia space where various cultural events are regularly held. This attracts not only antique lovers to the Museum, but also advanced youth.
