The oldest city in Croatia, cozy and quiet Sibenik, lies just a few kilometers from the famous resort city of Split. Perhaps the picturesque area with many temples and churches would have stayed back from popular tourist routes, if not for the creators of the cult TV series of all time "Game of Thrones", which turned the Croatian city into the glorious city of Braavos, the richest and most powerful free city. Since then, the stone-paved streets and small old squares have never been empty. Hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world, fans of the legendary series, annually visit Sibenik and, of course, its main attraction – the majestic Fortress of St. Michael.
The great medieval fortress rises on a hill right outside the Old Town, as if it still keeps an eye on its civilians. Even the majestic Cathedral of St. James is not as tall as the citadel. According to historical documents, the fortress was built around the 15th century. However, during archaeological excavations on the citadel grounds, traces of the culture of the Iron and even Bronze Age were discovered. The fortress got its name from the oldest church of Sibenik, located within the fortress walls. Before that, the defensive fortification was called the Fortress of St. Anne, whose statue was carefully preserved in the Church of St. Michael. Today, the statue can be seen in the Church of St. Anne, built next to the fortress in the middle of the 19th century.
Visitors are mainly impressed by the size of the fortress, as well as the fantastic view from the height of its walls of the city and the endless blue expanses of the fabulous Adriatic Sea. Besides, from the observation deck of the Fortress of St. Michael, you can admire the beautiful small lake, surrounded by lush greenery and fragrant colorful flowers.
