Old, cobblestone streets and red-tiled roofs ... this is how most stories about all European cities begin. A selfie successfully taken from the roofs of Zagreb or Split has long been lost count.

However, not every traveler can boast of having walked along the main street of the port city of Rijeka- Korzo. Meanwhile, the buildings on this street look like palaces and could be a great setting for a romantic story such as the novel "Eat pray love".

Tourists love to walk around Korzo at any time of the day and year. There is also an annual carnival procession.

The city tower is a special pride of residents. The city tower is located approximately in the middle of the street. It is this main symbol of the city that adorns most of the photos and Souvenirs from Rijeka.

The Rijeka tower was built in the XIII century. From the very beginning, the tower was part of the city gate complex. The gates and fortress walls themselves, unfortunately, have not been preserved to this day. Only a small part of them is visible to the left of the tower.

The modern city tower is a round-shaped structure whose lower foundation is decorated with elements in the Austrian Baroque style. Since the 17th century, it has several clocks. In its central part, there is a dial with Roman numerals, and on the other two sides, there are regular standard ones.

As a result of the earthquake of 1750, the building was severely damaged and required reconstruction. The sculptor Antonio Michelazzi not only strengthened the tower itself but also decorated it with images of the emblems of the Austrian kings Leopold I and Charles VI. Leopold's emblem is located directly below the clock. Previously, in its place was the image of the patron Saint of the city - Saint Vitus.

Throughout its history, the city tower has repeatedly changed its appearance and by the XVIII century was almost completely rebuilt. Today we can see the result of the last reconstruction of the end of the XIX century.
