Formed in the times of the Roman Empire, Pula has preserved a rich history and many monuments of ancient architecture. Sometimes modern tourists have the feeling that they are not in Croatia but somewhere in Rome or another ancient city of fabulous Italy. Pula has its own Colosseum, Forum and many ancient temples built by the ancient Romans, as well as one of the city's main attractions – the Triumphal Arch of the Sergii.

This magnificent monument of ancient architecture was erected in the 1st century BC in honor of the 29th Roman legion, which gained the long-awaited victory in the Battle of Actium. Thanks to this triumph in the merciless naval battle against the legendary Mark Antony and the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, the Roman ruler Octavian received the title of Augustus and became the first Roman emperor. This event became the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire. Besides, the triumphal arch immortalized the names of the ancient Roman patrician family of Sergii, dating back to the Trojans. The names of these prominent ancient Romans still adorn the historical architectural monument, along with the delightful antique sculptures of the Sergii.

The arch comprises many details including the images of cupids and bullheads, lavishly decorated with garlands of fine stone carvings, a statue of the goddess of victory Victoria, angels who defeated the serpent, mythical griffins, and sphinxes, as well as numerous floral ornaments.

Today, the Triumphal Arch of the Sergii adorns a small, picturesque square, a venue for city festivals and music events. Just a few meters away, there is a popular tourist bar called "Ulysses" in honor of the novel by the famous Irish writer and poet James Joyce, who lived in Pula in the 20th century.
