Pula is the oldest city in Croatia. This city on the Adriatic coast keeps the carefully preserved heritage of the great Roman Empire, like the giant Croatian colosseum, built by the Romans in the 1st century AD, and the majestic Triumphal Arch of the Sergii. But it is best to start exploring the oldest historical and cultural monuments of Pula from the main city square called Forum, which has decorated the Croatian port city since the times of ancient Rome.

This popular tourist attraction and business card of Pula are located in the western part of the city, at the foot of the hill next to the picturesque waterfront. It was built in the 1st century BC by the Romans, who wanted to supplement the missing land with an artificial embankment. It is hard to imagine that back in those days, people used such complex methods in the construction of ancient cities. At the same time, three Roman shrines were erected in Forum Square. The temple in honor of Jupiter, the father of all the gods, his wife Juno, and Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and war and the daughter of Jupiter himself, was built between two more modest temples dedicated to the goddess Roma and the first Roman Emperor Augustus. Unfortunately, only one Temple of Augustus has survived to this day. The greatness of the other temples can only be imagined from the ancient ruins.

The former temple of Roma was replaced by the Town Hall, built next to the iconic Temple of Augustus in the 13th century. The Town Hall inherited one wall from the temple. Perhaps such a clever solution of medieval architects allowed to preserve the creation of the ancient Romans, albeit in this way. Throughout its history, the Town Hall has undergone many changes. Today, it is a unique architectural monument that combines almost all architectural styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. Together, they look so well matched and harmonious, as if it was planned from the very beginning of the construction of the Town Hall.
