Tall, narrow, as if carved by a talented sculptor, stone columns rise in the vicinity of Varna, near the popular seaside resort of Bulgaria. For many years, scientists have struggled to unravel the origin of the unique Bulgarian stones. Some suggest the theory that the stones are just giant limestone deposits, some consider them stalagmites, and others believe that the columns are artificial, not natural, monuments. Scientists can not agree on this issue. And while they are conducting their researches, more and more legends about the stones appear, attracting curious travelers.
According to one legend, if you go for a walk through the vast desert area of the famous "Pobiti Kamani" and stand right in the center, then you will always be in a groove. However, not everyone dares to go through the entire "Stone Desert", because its area is almost 70 square kilometers. Not to mention that there is nowhere to hide from the scorching sun.
All the "stone trees" are located in groups. The lowest ones reach 5 meters, and the highest ones are 10 meters. With a thickness of 30 centimeters to 3 meters in diameter, they are all hollow and filled with fine sand. This fact is even more confusing to scientists who are trying to unravel the mystery of their origin. The age of the famous columns is equally impressive. Some of them are considered the most ancient in Europe. They are more than 50 million years old.
Every stone giant has its name according to its shape: "Monk", "Soldier", "Elephant", "Throne", "Waterfall" and even the whole "Family". All of them have become one of the main attractions in Bulgaria. Every year hundreds of tourists from all over the world visit the "Stone Desert" to feel the unique cosmic vibe and, of course, take stunning photos.
