Aladzha Monastery is a truly magical place. The monastery was carved into a steep rock, 40 meters high. The monastery appeared in the 4th century and lasted until the 14th century when it was attacked by the Ottoman invaders. It was looted and its inhabitants were driven out. The medieval Christian monastery is well preserved. At the entrance to the monastery, there is a museum dedicated to its history.
Aladzha has 2 tiers. The first is the temple, cells, and refectory. Wooden steps lead to the second floor, where there was a chapel. The catacombs are very close to the monastery. The monks hid from the invaders in them. Twice a week (Wednesday and Saturday) there is an opportunity to see a staged performance dedicated to the history of the monastery. The show is excellent, as all the action takes place right on the cliff.
The local nature, along with historical and mythological symbols, makes the monastery a great place for tourism and pilgrimage.
Admission is not free. And the monastery is not open all year round. It is better to visit it from May to October. Aladzha is located on the territory of a Natural Park, 15 km from Varna.
