Ropotamo Nature Reserve is one of the few places in Bulgaria that you need to visit as soon as possible. Just like the endangered species, the picturesque territory of the reserve is under threat of extinction and is the most protected by the state. These sad events that disturbed the ecological balance were caused by the construction of new nearby areas and the endless flow of tourists who do not always follow the rules of nature reserves.
Ropotomo received the status of a nature reserve in 1940, and 22 years later, it was declared a Bulgarian national park. It is located just a few kilometers from the town of Sozopol at the mouth of the Ropotamo River. The most common water bodies here are swamps, a favorite habitat for many endemic animal species and relict plants. By the way, fishing in the reserve is strictly prohibited, as well as hunting.
Until recently, Ropotamo has been home to many amazing animals. Today, populations of species such as roe deer and red deer have declined significantly due to relentless poaching. However, roe deer can still be found here, as well as deer, wild boar, fox, and jackal. More than 20 species of mammals are permanent residents of the reserve and are protected. There are also several types of reptiles in Ropotamo, including the leopard snake and the aesculapian snake. Besides, the reserve is the only place in Bulgaria inhabited by the arrow snake.
Ropotamo is a nesting place for various species of ducks, long-legged egrets, cormorants, and even eagles. There are 50 species of fish swimming in the Ropotamo River. Fishing here is prohibited, but it doesn't hurt to rent a fishing boat and travel along the park, enjoying the pristine natural scenery, clear fresh air, warm amber sun, and, of course, birdsongs coming from somewhere deep in the dense forests.
