The mild, close to the Mediterranean climate, the cleanest air, and the absence of gusty winds, thanks to the picturesque mountains, attract more and more tourists in search of new places to Bulgaria. In summer, travelers enjoy the golden sandy beaches and the gentle Black Sea, in winter – the ski resorts on the snow-white slopes of the Pirin Mountains. Together with the magnificent architectural monuments and the beauty of pristine nature, every part of Bulgaria becomes a desirable holiday destination. Whichever place travelers choose for their long-awaited vacation, Melnik, the smallest town in Bulgaria, is undoubtedly worth a visit. Sometimes the number of travelers here exceeds the number of residents, all because of its status, which fully justifies itself.
The museum town, architectural and historical reserve, Melnik, has long won the love of tourists. Travelers are immersed in a magical atmosphere by its colorful streets with ancient medieval houses, as well as the famous local wine, which is often compared to the French Bordeaux wines. Thick, strong, fragrant, always from a wooden barrel, the local wines deserve at least one evening spent in pleasant company in the wine-tasting cellars. But no matter how brilliant the wines are, don't stay too long in the cellars. Take a walk around the town, visit the memorial houses. For example, the largest 18th-century mansion in the Balkan Peninsula.
The magnificent merchant house of the Kordopulov family, with the windows made of Venetian glass and long wooden benches, covered with traditional carpets, is considered the main attraction of Melnik. The most noteworthy items of the house are the "prison closet", a high spacious wardrobe where the guilty servants were locked up, and the 80-meter-long underground cellar with the largest wine barrel for 12.5 thousand liters of wine.
Not far from the Kordopulov House, there is an ancient church with an altar icon of St. Barbara. Its ruins are often decorated with lit candles, coins, and sweets, left by local Christian believers. However, most of the outstanding sights of Melnik are located not in the town itself but its neighborhood. For example, the legendary Rozhen Monastery, the famous Melnik Pyramids, or other world-famous tourist sites.
