Bosnia and Herzegovina is less hyped than the neighboring states of Croatia and Montenegro but no less charming. It is loved by its modern ski resorts, popular balneological centers, and, of course, numerous historical and cultural monuments from the time of the Ottoman Empire. Not to mention the fabulous natural scenery and incredibly delicious traditional dishes. But the main pride of these places, of almost every city in this amazing country, is the ancient defensive fortresses that have survived to this day. Hence the affectionate nickname of Bosnia and Herzegovina – "keeper of ancient citadels".

Undoubtedly, the Ottoman Turks made their significant contribution to the construction of the fortifications of the former Sanjak of Bosnia. However, most of these buildings appeared in the times of Ancient Rome. Besides, there are modest defensive towers of less wealthy feudal lords and forts of the Austro-Hungarians. So it seems that the entire area of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina is dotted with defensive citadels.

A particularly noteworthy citadel is a small stone fortress on the top of the famous Pyramid of the Sun, which rises above the fabulous valley of the Fojnica and Bosna rivers. From a height of more than 300 meters, the defensive fortress seems to watch the ancient city of Visoko, located at the foot of the pyramid. It got its name, Visoki Fortress, from it. Once the ancient citadel played an important role not only in the history of the city but the entire state. Many state treaties of the Bosnian kings were signed here.

To get to the fortress itself, you will have to take a long walk along a winding mountain road and overcome rocky slopes. However, your efforts will be more than compensated by a delightful view of Visoko and its surroundings. The fortress is small, only 60 by 25 meters plus a couple of observation towers and the ruins of buildings inside. But, it is never deserted: in 2006, the fortress was considered a "place of power". So today, it is praised by fans of esotericism.
