An amazing example of the Late Gothic style with elements of Roman style, richly adorned with sculptures and bright colorful stained-glass windows, is one of the main attractions of Liege and one of the best monuments of the sacred architecture of Belgium... Fabulous St James's Church can be glorified with numerous praises, but there is nothing better than seeing that medieval architectural masterpiece at least once in your lifetime: to feel the admiration that travelers have when they see it.

The church of a Benedictine abbey, which was founded in 1015 by Liege Bishop Baldericus II, was dedicated to St. James (monks of this order have long worshiped him). Unfortunately, only the name and the bell tower foundation remained from the Roman-style church. The modern building of the church appeared at the beginning of the 16th century. The interior of the temple (original stained-glass windows and paintings which are the true pieces of sacred art) is attributed to the same period. The stained-glass windows, which were made in the 16th century and then restored by the famous Belgian stained-glass artist, Jean-Baptiste Capronnier, in the middle of the 19th century, deserve special attention. You can still see images of John the Baptist pointing to the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, Our Lady, little angels and figures of benefactors who donated money for the decoration of the temple, their families’ coats of arms, and emblems.

According to the opinion of Adolphe Napoleon Didron, a French archeologist and art historian, the stained-glass windows of St. James Church are the most beautiful stained-glass windows, that have been preserved in Belgium since the 16th century up to our time. The baroque sculptures made by the Belgian sculptor, Jean Del Cour, at the end of the 17th century (including the famous statue of St. James made in 1691) are also worth attention.

While enjoying paintings and stained-glass windows, statues, and sculptures, do not forget about the main church attraction – an old pipe organ made in the Renaissance style in 1600.
